The inspiration for the disruptor was the ?Emeniar VII? hand weapons seen in the STAR TREK episode - A Taste of Armageddon. The shape of the disruptor - however - was modified with a longer and more-detailed front end. The actual original series props did not incorporate any lights or electrical effects - and in fact - a disruptor is never shown being fired in any episode of the original series. In the first season episode - Errand of Mercy - one hears disruptors being fired - but one never sees the results. Later - the Klingons share their technology with the Romulans - who adopt their disruptor design as well as use their ship design (The Enterprise Incident). In order to accurately recreate the complex geometry of the Klingon?s weapon - Master Replicas? design team examined one of the surviving original film props in the possession of a private collector. Hundreds of measurements and photographs were taken - and the prop was digitally scanned in order to develop a precise rendering of the original prop.
